On May 18, 2025, Jamal Roberts—a 27-year-old P.E. teacher and father of three from Meridian, Mississippi—was crowned winner of American Idol Season 23. His win marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Black man to claim the title since Ruben Studdard in 2003.

Roberts’ journey to the top was anything but overnight. After two previous unsuccessful auditions, he returned to the stage with a rendition of Rick James’ “Mary Jane” that showcased his Southern soul and storytelling prowess. Throughout the season, he delivered moving performances, including a powerful cover of Jelly Roll’s “Liar,” which brought both the audience and Jelly Roll himself to tears.

His authenticity and relatability endeared him to fans across the nation, making his win not just a personal triumph but a cultural milestone.
